When planning home improvements or tackling a renovation project, window sizes can be a head-scratcher. Maybe you’re dealing with an awkward space, a tiny bathroom, or need extra light in a compact area.
We often get asked about minimum window sizes, especially regarding uPVC windows. We’ve written this piece to look at what’s possible with small windows in your home.
How Small Can UPVC Windows Be?
For fixed uPVC windows (ones that don’t open), you can go as small as 300mm × 300mm (about 12 inches square). These tiny windows are perfect for bringing light into small spaces without taking up too much wall area.
For windows that open, like uPVC casement windows, most manufacturers can make windows with a minimum width of around 400mm and a minimum height of about 450mm.
Building Regulations for Small Windows
When fitting windows, especially small ones, you need to keep building regulations in mind. There are two primary considerations, ventilation and fire safety.
Ventilation Requirements
Building regulations in the UK require that habitable rooms have adequate ventilation. This usually means having an openable window with an area equal to at least 1/20th of the room’s floor area.
For very small spaces like bathrooms, you might be able to use mechanical ventilation (an extractor fan) instead of an openable window, which gives you more flexibility with window size.
Fire Safety and Escape Windows
Safety is a significant consideration. If you’re putting windows in bedrooms or other rooms used for sleeping, at least one window should be big enough to escape through in case of fire. This ‘egress window’ must have:
- An openable area of at least 0.33m² (about 3.5 square feet)
- A minimum width and height of 450mm (about 18 inches)
- A windowsill no higher than 1100mm from the floor
This means your small window can’t serve as an escape route in bedrooms. You’ll need at least one normal-sized window elsewhere in the room.
Practical Uses for Small UPVC Windows
Small windows might be limited in size, but they’re big on versatility. Here are some common places homeowners are using them:
Bathrooms
Small windows are perfect for bathrooms, where privacy is important but natural light is still welcome. A small, high-level window with obscure glass gives you the best of both worlds. Many homeowners opt for small top-hung windows in these spaces, as they can provide ventilation without compromising privacy.
Landings and Hallways
These areas often lack natural light. A small, fixed window can brighten these spaces and make dark hallways more welcoming.
Alongside Larger Windows
Small fixed windows can complement larger windows, creating interesting light patterns and adding character to your home. They’re particularly popular in period properties across the West Midlands, where they can maintain the traditional look.
Kitchen Counters
Kitchens often benefit from small windows above the sink or between the countertop and upper cupboards. These windows let in valuable natural light while you work and offer pleasant views of the garden or outdoor space. Top-hung styles are popular for quick ventilation while cooking, without taking up much wall space.
Things To Consider with Small UPVC Windows
Energy Efficiency
Even small windows need to be energy efficient. Modern uPVC windows with double glazing help reduce heat loss regardless of their size. Replacing old single-glazed small windows with modern uPVC versions can make a noticeable difference to your heating bills.
Styles and Colours
Just because a window is small doesn’t mean it can’t look good. Our uPVC windows come in various styles and colours, including popular anthracite grey and traditional white. You can match them with your other windows for a cohesive look across your home.
Small casement windows can be particularly charming in cottage-style properties, while a more minimal frame design works well in contemporary homes. We’ve installed small windows in all sorts of properties across the West Midlands, from Victorian terraces to new builds.
Maintenance
One of the benefits of choosing uPVC is the minimal maintenance required. Unlike timber windows, uPVC doesn’t need painting or treating, and won’t warp, peel, crack or swell.
Creative Solutions for Compact Spaces
If standard window options don’t quite work for your space, there are some common creative solutions:
Custom Shapes
We can make uPVC windows in bespoke shapes, not just rectangles. Round, triangular, or arched small windows can be real feature pieces while fitting into awkward spaces.
Window Combinations
Sometimes, combining a fixed small window with an openable section gives you the best solution – light, ventilation, and compliance with building regulations all in one installation.
