What Are Timber Effect Windows?

Timber effect windows are high-performance uPVC windows designed to replicate the appearance of traditional wooden frames. They combine the classic look of timber windows with the benefits of modern materials, offering exceptional thermal efficiency, minimal maintenance, and outstanding durability. These windows are perfect for homeowners who love the appearance of wooden frames but want to avoid the regular maintenance and potential issues that can affect traditional timber. They’re also ideal for period properties where maintaining character is important, or for modern homes seeking a touch of traditional charm.

At Windows & Doors 2 You, we offer two premium timber alternative window systems – the Residence Collection and Timberlook. Both provide authentic wood grain effects and traditional joinery details that make them virtually indistinguishable from real timber windows.

    Conservation and Heritage

Timber effect windows are vital for homes in conservation areas and for listed buildings where maintaining traditional aesthetics is crucial. Unlike standard uPVC windows, our timber alternative windows have been specifically designed to satisfy the strict requirements set by local planning authorities for heritage properties.

The authentic detailing is what sets these windows apart, from flush sash designs to joinery-style corners that replicate the craftsmanship of wooden windows. Both our Residence Collection and Timberlook windows offer historically accurate features such as traditional cill options, authentic hardware, and decorative details like astragal bars.

Available in a wide range of colours including classic whites, heritage greens, warm creams, and realistic woodgrain finishes like Golden Oak and Rosewood, these windows can be tailored to complement your property’s style. For period homes, we offer heritage colour collections specifically designed to match traditional paintwork and dual-colour options allow for different finishes inside and out.

    The Residence Collection

We offer two distinct systems from The Residence Collection that are designed for different property styles and performance needs. These high-quality windows combine exceptional thermal performance with authentic timber aesthetics and have been accepted for use in many restrictive conservation areas across the UK.

The R7 system features a 75mm profile depth with a 7-chamber design for outstanding energy efficiency. With its fully flush appearance, it works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional settings. Available with either 28mm double glazing or 44mm triple glazing, these windows achieve impressive U-values as low as 0.8 W/m²K, significantly reducing heat loss and helping to lower energy bills.

For more traditional properties, the R9 system provides an authentic replication of 19th-century timber windows. With a substantial 100mm frame and advanced 9-chamber design, R9 windows deliver exceptional thermal insulation while faithfully recreating proportions of traditional wooden frames. The R9 system has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of conservation areas and heritage projects, offering an excellent timber alternative for Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian homes.

Both R7 and R9 windows are available in a selection of heritage-inspired colours, with premium finishes that provide a realistic wood effect. These windows also meet high standards for security and weather resistance, offering peace of mind alongside their appearance.

    Timberlook Windows

Timberlook windows bring together the charm of traditional wooden windows with all the benefits of modern materials and manufacturing techniques. These timber effect uPVC windows are ideal for period properties and conservation projects, while also being a great choice for modern homes seeking a classic look.

Timberlook windows are available in two main styles, flush sash and bay and bow. Flush sash windows have a flat exterior where the opening part of the window sits flush with the frame – just like real wooden windows, while bay and bow windows that let more light into your home and create more interior space.

While they look like traditional wooden frames, Timberlook windows offer modern benefits, notably excellent thermal efficiency. The frames have several chambers inside that trap air, creating a barrier against cold weather and helping to reduce heating bills. This makes them much more energy efficient than the timber windows they replace, contributing to reduced bills and a lower carbon footprint.
